How Time Flies in News
"How Time Flies" is a regular popular feature in The Banner print edition. Typically, there are two separate "How Time Flies" columns published every week. One column highlights the general news events of various years in The Banner's history and the other column highlights the sports-related events during years past. Knightstown's weekly newspaper, now called The Banner, has been in existence since 1867. The news in 'How Time Flies' columns are garnered from old newspaper copies from about 1930 to 1997. The columns are researched and written by Banner Sports Editor Ty Swincher.

Trent, Fox Named Police, Fireman of the Year in 1983
Deputy Town Marshal Talmadge Trent was named 1982 police officer of the year and John Fox was named fireman of the year in a ceremony sponsored by the Knightstown American Legion Post 152.
Twenty-five musicians at Knightstown High School won first place gold medals in 13 events at the District Solo and Ensemble conrest at Ball State University. The competition included student musicians from more than 20 high schools. Winning first place and their events included Mindy Magee, trumpet solo; Robin Clapp, trumpet solo; Erikk Knapp, Sousaphone solo; Mike Wade, trumpet solo; John Smith and Brian Hulse, trumpet duet; Greg Giese and Jamie Smith, alto sax duet; Rachelle McCorkle, Tammy Reece, Stephanie Lindsay, B-flat clarinet trio; Ross Wells and Brian Hulse, trumpet duet; Valerie Schmidt, flute solo; Jamie Smith, Greg Giese and Anthony Darling, also sax trio; Sherry Lee, Valerie Schmidt and Cindy Estridge, miscellaneous woodwind trio; Bryan Towse, snare drum solo; Rachel Rose, Julie Jackson, Amanda Westerfeld and Rozelle Gatmaitan, clarinet quartet.
Kevin Wayne Knott was one among 88 students to be named to the Academic Honors List at Campbellsville College. Kevin is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kenneth Knott, of Knightstown, as is majoring in social work and minoring in psychology. He is a 1980 KHS graduate.
Brian Hulse, an eighth grade at Knightstown High School, is in the cast of the Raintree County Opera House production of “On Golden Pond”. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. David Hulse of rural Knightstown, and will play the son, Billy, in the production at the Lewisville theater. He also studies at the Junior Civic Theater in Indianapolis.

Marry McNew, Knightstown sand and gravel contractor, will receive the “Man of the Year” award from the “Little 50” Club at a dinner at the White Kitchen in Dunreith.
Boy Scout Troop 68 of Knightstown is being re-organized and will apply for a charter, under the sponsorship of Knightstown American Legion Post 152.
Mrs. Florence Hanley, who has not lived in Knightstown in more than 30 years, has passed away and left $3,000 to the Bethel Presbyterian Church, and another $1,000 to the Knightstown Library.
Latest estimates released by the state highway department indicated that the new Interstate highway 70 will be built one-to-two miles north of U.S. 40. Although that is believed to be the approximate distance from town, highway authorities said the stretch of the interstate near Knightstown could actually be another mile or two farther north. Final plans have not been mapped, but survey crews are working just north of the Montgomery Creek bridge, which is about three miles north of Knightstown.
Three Knightstown men have been accepted for service in the U.S. Army. They are Arthur F. Meredith, Harry Manning and Fred Frazier. Wesley Ratliff is now Seaman Second Class in the U.S. Navy. A group of friends and neighbors gathered at the home of Charles Atkins, near Mays, to help him celebrate his 18th birthday.
