Meet ... Rose Mary Clarke
Rose Mary Clarke’s Hoosier roots run deep. Her maternal ancestors settled land in Clinton County when there were still Indians present. She grew up in Knightstown during the 1940’s and 1950’s and lived within five miles of the National Road (US 40) most of her life. Rose Mary attended grade school at the old Knightstown Academy building (pictured on the The Banner’s masthead and on the header of this website) as did her father, aunts and uncles before her.
“Look from the Earth to the stars” was the message that the globe and telescope on the roof had for this small-town girl. It was here that her teachers instilled in her a love of learning. After high school, she graduated from Ball State, got a Masters degree in French literature at Indiana University and has lived in Indianapolis ever since.
Her association with The Banner began when she was a junior in high school and did office work and wrote columns. She began writing columns again when the current publisher bought the newspaper. Rose Mary is a compulsive reader who reads cereal boxes if nothing else is at hand and is passionate about good food, Impressionistic art, nature, her husband, friends, daughter and three perfect grandsons. She enjoys traveling, especially to Paris, her favorite city. In her essays she tries to speak with a personal voice that reflects the joys, sadness, foibles, nostalgia for the past, humor, and eccentricities of the human condition that all people share.
