Lady Panthers Win 3rd Straight - Union County Latest Victims as Knightstown Girls Pull Away, 63-46
January 21, 2009 - After losing three of their first five games this season, the Knightstown Lady Panther basketball team has turned things around by winning seven of its last nine.
The most recent victim was potential Sectional 42 Union County, who was whipped by Knightstown 63-46 last week. That improved coach Dawn Basicker’s team to 9-5 on the year and marked their third straight win. The team has emerged triumphant in five of its last six games after starting the season with a 2-3 record.
Union County didn’t go away without a fight, battling the Lady Panthers surprisingly well in the first half. Knightstown led just 13-12 at the end of the first quarter, and the Lady Patriots went on a run to take a 29-28 halftime lead.
A 14-10 third quarter run returned the lead to the Lady Panthers at 42-39, and then it was lights out for the visiting Union County squad. Knightstown opened up the offensive flood gates in the fourth quarter by outscoring the visitors 21-7 over the final eight minutes.
Sophomore Megan Hiner had another monster game for Knightstown, drilling 8-of-17 field goals and all six of her free throws for a game-high 23 points. She also had six steals, five assists and six rebounds in a tremendous all-purpose outing.
Through 14 games Megan Hiner is averaging 15.1 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game.
Sabrina Hatfield also had a great game against the Lady Patriots, finishing with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting. She had five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Natosha Hiner also scored in double digits with 10 points, and had three rebounds and two steals. Natosha hit on 4-of-8 field goals, including both of her attempts from three-point range.
Knightstown also got a seven-point, seven-rebound performance from the always-steady Danielle Altman. Freshman Kaelee Kuhn had five points and two boards, and sophomore Brittany Brown scored four points. Senior Jocelyn Sturgill did not score but had four key assists, four steals and two rebounds.
Knightstown’s third straight win gives them much-needed momentum heading into the final weeks of the season. The Lady Panthers host two more potential Sectional 42 opponents this week.
Tuesday night the girls entertained Cambridge City Lincoln (5-9), and Friday night they host 7-5 Shenandoah in the first game of a double-header that precedes the boys teams taking the court for the 8 p.m. game.
