After 37 Years and 41 Games, 1 Point Separates Panthers, Titans; 22 Games Have Been Decided by a Touchdown or Less

October 1, 2008 - Sometimes it has been downplayed, and occasionally one team is much stronger than the other.

But on the field and in the stands, there is no football rivalry in the area that can match up with the Knightstown Panthers and Tri High Titans.

Both are each other’s oldest continuous rival, as the series dates back to 1971. Knightstown and Tri High have played each other 41 times on the gridiron over the last 37 years. After all of those games spanning nearly four decades, the average margin of victory between these two arch rivals is a measly 1.1 points per game.

The Panthers have averaged 19.8 points per game against Tri, while the Titans have put up 18.7 points per game in the series. In 41 games the two teams have been separated by a total of just 48 points. Knightstown leads the series, 24-17.

Friday night’s game at Tri should be a good one. The Panthers have won the last two times the teams met, taking a 13-6 decision last season. In 2006 the Titans whipped Knightstown 35-14 during the season, but the Panthers came back to knock off Tri in the sectional semifinals, 32-29. In that whacky game, Knightstown had a 32-7 lead before the Titans scored 22 points in a span of 21 seconds late in the fourth quarter.

Surprises have been the norm when these two teams take the field. There have been absolutely thrilling games over the years, including a crazy 35-34 Panther win in 1988, and a triple-overtime 36-35 Panther victory in 2001. There have also been blowouts, with the worst occurring in 1990 when the Titans smacked the winless Panthers 60-0. In all, 22 games have been decided by a touchdown or less, and 10 games by three points or less.

The rivalry escalated to levels beyond any other in the mid 1970s and has never looked back. Home field advantage has never been much of a factor historically, as the Panthers are 12-8 at their own stadium and 12-9 at Tri.

Tri High head coach Bryan Peggs is in his 10th year heading up that program, and he was a star player for the Panthers in the early 1980s. Peggs donned jersey number 45 and was a starting tailback and defensive back, earning all-conference honors. Back then, beating Tri meant everything to Peggs.

Obviously, that’s not the case today.

As a coach, Peggs is 3-7 against the Panthers for his career. As a player, his Panthers beat the Titans 30-21 his senior year.

The Titans are 2-4 on the season.

Knightstown coach Bob Prescott has his Panthers at 3-3 this season. He is 2-1 for his career against Tri. The Panthers and Titans have played three common opponents. Tri lost to Shenandoah 34-14, while Knightstown fell to the Raiders 41-20. Tri lost to Hagerstown 34-7 last weekend and the Panthers lost to the Tigers 6-0 in week two. Both teams also lost to Centerville. The Bulldogs beat the Panthers 21-18 in the season opener, and Tri fell to the Bulldogs the next week 40-14.
