High-Flying Panthers Take Road Trip to North Decatur

September 10, 2008 - Knightstown’s varsity football team will make the trek to northern Decatur County Friday night, and the opponent is probably just as big a mystery to KHS coaches as the Panthers likely are to them.

But historically, the two teams have never been a good match on the football field and the games have resulted in someone winning by a blowout margin nearly ever season.

This year things could be different and the game could be a pretty close match.

Knightstown is 1-2 on the season and their opponents have combined for a 6-3 record this season. North Decatur is 2-1, but their opposition is just 2-7 on the year. The Chargers have beaten Union County 26-20, but the Patriots are 0-3 and have been outscored 82-39 in three games. North Decatur also beat Edinburg 13-12, and the Lancers are 0-3 and have been outscored 90-34.

The Chargers lost Friday night to Triton Central, 59-6. Despite a 2-1 record, they have given up 91 points in three games while scoring just 35.

They don’t look like the typical North Decatur team. But they are returning home after that shellacking at Triton Central and will likely be fuming mad. The Knightstown-North Decatur rivalry dates back to the early 1970s when both schools were in the Big Blue River Conference. The Chargers won at Knightstown last season 34-7, and the previous year 41-7.

Traditionally, these two teams just don’t match up well. Prior to the two blowout Charger victories over the last two years, Knightstown won by scores of 47-7, 41-0, 30-0 and 35-10. The Panthers won the first-ever meeting between the schools in 1973, 55-0.

The average margin of victory in a Knightstown-North Decatur game over the past 15 years has been more than 26 points. Only two games have been decided by less than two touchdowns.

The last well-played game between Knightstown and North Decatur occurred in 2001, when the Chargers won 8-0. The Panthers have won 10 of the last 15 times the two teams have met.
