Redemption on the Mind of Lady Panther Spikers
August 20, 2008 - New Knightstown High School volleyball coach Chris Underwood is taking over a program that compiled an uncharacteristic 6-26 record last season. That dismal mark followed consecutive years in which the girls won more than 20 games.
Underwood hopes to turn things around this season and get back to playing Knightstown volleyball. The team lost just two players, Megan Grant and Janice Ortman, to graduation.
Knightstown returns seniors Crystal Heim, Brandi Lightner and Alexis Marsh to the roster this year. Heim will again be the outside hitter, and Lightner will be used as a defensive specialist as well as an outside hitter. Marsh will clog up the middle and is the tallest player on the team. She’ll get plenty of help from talented freshman newcomer Michelle Hochstedler, who is one of the best hitters on the team.
Junior Haley Cruse started last season, and fellow juniors Lindsay Kennedy and Katy Spence have made the squad this year.
Seven sophomores who should see action include Brittany Brown, Brianna Bordeau, Kristen Florea, Jodie Grant, Cortney Hastings and Kelsi McRoberts. Freshmen Shay Pope, Paula Hobbs, Megan Taylor and Maribeth Wells round out the roster.
The Lady Panthers open their season tonight (Wednesday) at Sectional 47 foe Centerville, and play in the Southwestern (Shelby) Invitational Saturday. Their first home game is next Wednesday, Sept. 27, against Blue River.
