 Racoon State Recreation Area Reopens Beach

August 6, 2008 - Raccoon State Recreation Area, located at Cecil M. Harden Lake, has re-opened the public swimming beach and all outlying boat ramps. The facilities had been closed due to high water.

The normal entrance fee of $5 for in-state vehicles and $7 for out-of-state vehicles apply. For more information call (765) 344-1412.

Raccoon State Recreation Area is located on U.S. Highway 36 in Parke County in west central Indiana, 50 miles west of Indianapolis and 35 miles northeast of Terre Haute.

 

A canoe and kayak into nature event will be held on Aug. 23 at Patoka Lake, located at Wickliff, IN. Everyone is welcome to participate and the event is free to the public.

Persons interested in participating should bring a canoe or kayak and join the naturalist for a water tour of Patoka Lake on Saturday, August 23 at 1p.m. Participants will meet at the Visitor Center and car caravan to Little Patoka boat ramp.

Event organizers will take participants on a tour to look for bald eagles, river otter, sandstone cliffs, beaver and other natural wonders. Everyone should bring insect repellant, preferred refreshments and wear sunscreen for the two-hour journey. Canoes are available from Department of Natural Resources while supplies last.

There is an entrance fee of $5 per vehicle for Indiana residents ($7 out of state) required for the Newton Stewart State Recreation area, Patoka Reservoir, located north of Wickliffe on Hwy. 164.

 

Enjoy a night hike at Patoka Lake on Saturday August 23 beginning at 9:30 p.m. at the modern campgrounds center shelterhouse on Patoka Lake.

Interested persons should bring family and friends, insect repellent and join in a look at the world of the night as the group hikes into the woods. Participants can explore how nocturnal creatures use their five senses to survive in their environment.
