 Royals Fall Flat in Regional

March 12, 2008 - Basketball season came to an unexpected end for the Eastern Hancock Royals Monday night in the regional round of play.

Eastern Hancock couldn’t quite get over the hump after falling behind to 8th-ranked Lawrenceburg (21-3), losing 69-56 in the Class 2A Regional at Greenfield-Central Monday night. The game had been scheduled for Saturday morning but was postponed to Monday because of the snow storm over the weekend.

The Royals trailed just 32-31 at the half and were still within three points after freshman Dustin Smith hit a trey with two minutes left in the third quarter. But Lawrenceburg scored three straight buckets – all off of Royal turnovers – and built a 10-point lead with just six minutes to play in the game.

Royal big man Caleb Kennedy finished with a game-high 32 points in his final game for Eastern Hancock. Smith had another solid night, nailing four-of-five field goals and all three of his three-point attempts for 14 points.

Robbie Roland, who hit a last-second shot to knock Knightstown out of the sectional the week before, finished with six points. Jeff Cushing had three points and Jensen Maroska added one.

Six Eastern Hancock seniors, including Kennedy, Maroska, Eric Buenger, Roland, Jordan Wilson and Justin Maxwell, will be lost to graduation this year.
