Best Crowd of Season Attends Fan Appreciation Night at Mt. Lawn

August 29, 2007 - It was Fan Appreciation night at Mt. Lawn and the largest crowd of the season turned out to be part of the festivities. Motion Motor Late Models, Dependable Drywall Thunder Cars, Collins Auto Service Hornets and Jenmarco.com UMRA Midgets made up the racing program.

Additional entertainment was provided by an-on track autograph/photo session, big wheel races, at nickel scramble and a demonstration by Thunder Car driver Mike Vaccaro of the Middletown Police Department and his K-9 friend, Gizmo.

In the Late Models, Doug Hinshaw of New Castle led all 30 laps to pick up the first feature win of his career. In his victory lane interview, Hinshaw said, “I have waited a long time to say this, but Scott, this one is for you”.

Hinshaw dedicated his win to his cousin, Scott Hinshaw, who passed away early this year. Doug is driving the same car that Scott drove during the 2004-2006 seasons. Hinshaw was followed by Scott Knepley of Greensboro, David McConnell of Shirley, Terry Cater of New Castle, William Mefford of Knightstown, Brett Marcum of Morristown, David Fox II of Markleville, LJ Lines of Lewisville, Randy Anderson of Knightstown and Johnny Fugate of New Castle. Fast time went to Mefford with Cater winning the Razzles Dash for Cash.

Eric Evans won the Thunder Car feature in commanding style. Evans, of Greenfield, led the final 12 laps of the 25-lap event to take the win over second place Chuck Cook. Cook was followed by Kyle Evans of Greenfield, Kevin Claborn of Cambridge City, Brett Marcum of Morristown, Pam McConnell of Shirley, John Heaston of Shelbyville, Cory Cook of Greenfield, Eddie King of Kennard and Ray Evans of Greenfield. Evans set fast time, with the Dependable Drywall Dash for Cash going to Claborn.

In the Hornet division, Anderson’s Kenny Lee won for the second time in 2007. Ryan Claborn, of Cambridge City, finished a close second, followed by Mike Burgess of Indianapolis, Russ Humes of Middletown, Keith Morris of Mt Summit, Chris Jennings of Cambridge City, Nate Lummis of Anderson, Jerry Small of Arcadia, Mark Dulworth of Middletown and Jacob Johnson of Wilkinson. Joyce Dyer set fast time in qualifications, with Lee winning the Collins Dash for Cash.

Rushville’s Tate Martz picked up the Jemarco.com UMRA Midget feature. Heat winners were Nick Speidel of Muncie, Martz and rookie driver Brandon Gray of Indianapolis. A complete listing of the midget results can be found on the web at umra.com.

After the Big Wheel races and the nickel scramble for the kids the Mt. Lawn track, a truck entered the speedway driving in the wrong direction. The truck drove around the track and was being pursued by a police cruiser with red lights flashing, its siren blaring and Gizmo barking in the back of the cruiser. After the pair made a couple of laps, the track truck pulled to the infield and out jumped Louie Wagner, in a full bite suit, appearing to be making an attempt to flee from the police.

Gizmo would have nothing to do with that, and being let out of the police car, made short work of catching Wagner and forcing him to the ground. Wagner made one more futile attempt to escape, but was no match for Gizmo.

The Season Championships and the final point races of the 2007 season with dashes, heat and 50-lap feature in all divisions will take place at Mt. Lawn Speedway next weekend.
