Philip H. Hamm, 87, of Knightstown, died February 14 at Henry County Memorial Hospital in New Castle.
He was born October 19, 1921, in Henry County, a son of the late Sam and Laura (Riley) Hamm.
Mr. Hamm was a Mays High School graduate who attended Ball State Teachers College. He served in the Canadian Royal Air Force and was a U.S. Navy pilot in the South Pacific during World War II. Mr. Hamm received the Purple Heart. He retired from Tweedy Lumber Company in Knightstown and was very active in his community. Additionally, he was past president and a 50-year member of the Knightstown Optimist Club, and remained one of the club’s most active members. Mr. Hamm was a constant presence at Knightstown’s Little League ball diamonds during baseball and softball season. He also gave his time to the fish wagon and the Optimist Club’s youth soccer program. An organizer of the Hoosier Gym’s after school program, he was also one of its most faithful volunteers. Mr. Hamm was also an avid fan and loyal supporter of Knightstown High School’s football and basketball teams. He was a 50-year member of Knightstown’s Golden Rule Masonic Lodge and a member of the Knightstown Chamber of Commerce. He received the chamber’s Citizen of the Year award in 2002. He was also named a Sagamore of the Wabash in 2004 for his years of public service.
Survivors include three sons, Gary (wife, Deborah) Hamm, Jeffrey (wife, Lisa) Hamm, and Gregory Hamm; a daughter, Linda (husband, Roy) Wilhite; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Salina (Weber) Hamm; two brothers, Rodney and Virgil Hamm; and three sisters, Marie Mohler, Ruby Maple and Adrienne Jarrett.
