William R. Chapman
June 23, 1929 – Oct. 21, 2008
William R. “Bill” Chapman, 79, of Cambridge City, died October 21 at Pinehurst Village in Centerville.
He was born June 23, 1929, in Knightstown, a son of the late Harry E. and Rosetta (Rice) Chapman.
Mr. Chapman was a 1949 Cambridge City-Lincoln High School graduate who later served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He worked for 32 years as a machinist for Dana Corporation-Perfect Circle before retiring in 1992. An avid hunter and fisherman, he enjoyed collecting guns. Mr. Chapman combined machining and his gun hobby by building two 22-250 Swift rifles. He enjoyed all kinds of sports, but he particularly enjoyed racing.
Survivors include his wife, Beulah L. (Heaston) Chapman; a son, William “Joe” (wife, Phyllis) Chapman of Cambridge City; two grandsons, Scott (wife, Susana) Powell and Jeremy (wife, Amber) Patton, all of Cambridge City; five great-grandchildren, Isaiah Powell, Melinda and Susan Alvarez and Jaela and Jack Patton; two brothers, Ed (wife, Josie) Chapman of San Diego, Cal., and Alfred (wife, Erma) Chapman of Eaton, Ohio; and four sisters, Louella Stevens of Buckeye, Ariz., Wanda Carpenter and Janet McCord, both of Cambridge City, and Judy Flowe of Charlotte, N.C.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Gerald.
Funeral services were October 27 at Waskom Capitol Hill Chapel in Cambridge City with Tracy Wright officiating. Visitation was October 26 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Disabled American Veterans or the Golay Center.
