Harriet B. McClarnon
June 2, 1910 – Aug. 21, 2008
Harriet B. McClarnon, 98, died August 21.
She was born on June 2, 1910, in Carthage, a daughter of the late John and Anna (Finney) Butler.
Mrs. McClarnon was a Center High School (Rush County) graduate who went on to earn an associates degree at Indiana Business College. She married Robert McClarnon on Feb. 28, 1932, in Indianapolis. She worked as a bookkeeper and was a former executive director of the Hancock County Tuberculosis Association. Mrs. McClarnon retired from the Hancock County Highway Department in 1968. A member of Charlottesville United Methodist Church, she was also a member of Nameless Creek Literary Club and Hancock County Democrats. Additionally, Mrs. McClarnon was a member of Indiana Angus Auxiliary, Indiana Angus Association, American Angus Association, American Angus Auxiliary and the Hancock County Cattlemen’s Association.
In her free time, she enjoyed sewing, baking pies and traveling. Mrs. McClarnon enjoyed spending time with her family and the Registered Angus cattle operation, McClarnon Stock Farm, to which she was a partner. The farm received the State of Indiana Hoosier Homestead Award and Mrs. McClarnon received the Distinguised Pioneer Breeder Award from the American Angus Hall of Fame as well as the Vera Sherbahn Angus Auxiliary Award.
Survivors include a daughter, Judy (husband, Keith) Brown of Greenfield; two granddaughters, Julia (husband, Chris) Wickard of Greenfield and Jamie (husband, Jeremy) Lowes of Greenfield; and three great-grandchildren, Jordyn and Jacob Wickard and Kaitlyn Lowes.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert McClarnon; and a son, James “Jim” McClarnon.
Funeral services were August 25 at Erlewein Mortuary in Greenfield with Pastor Debbie Beason officiating. Burial followed at Park Cemetery in Greenfield. Visitation was August 25 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Charlottesville United Methodist Church, Indiana Angus Auxiliary or Hancock County Democratic Party.
