Mary L. Surface, 80, of rural Lewisville, died March 26 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.
She was born in Acton on April 4, 1927, a daughter of the late Jacob Gordon and Ruth Marie (Bills) Lowes.
Mrs. Surface was a 1945 Whiteland High School graduate. She enjoyed farming with her late husband, Bill. The couple farmed in the Greenwood (Johnson County) area for several years before moving to their farm in Lewisville in 1961. Mrs. Surface enjoyed all aspects of farming. She also enjoyed spending time with her granddaughter, fishing and rabbit hunting. She was a member of Honey Creek United Methodist Church in Greenwood.
Survivors include a daughter, Elaine Surface-Russell of Knightstown; a granddaughter, Bailey Surface-Russell; four half-sisters, JoAn (husband, Lowell) Nichols of Indianapolis, Carolyn (husband, Dan) Quinn of Fishers, Marilyn (husband, David) Brandt of Munster and Patricia Minnich of Indianapolis; a half-brother, Thomas Lowes of Florida; a stepbrother, William Lawrence Bright of Greenwood; and a stepsister, Betty (Hall) Hendricks of Fairland.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin A. Surface; an infant brother, Robert Lowes; a stepbrother, Samuel Wendell Bright; and a son-in-law, Dennis Russell.
Funeral services were March 29 at Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home in Lewisville with Chaplain Russell Jarvis officiating. Graveside services and burial followed at Forest Lawn Memory Garden Cemetery in Greenwood with Rev. Wilma Allen officiating. Visitation was March 28 at the funeral home.
