James E. Copeland

March 3, 1929 – March 9, 2008

James E. Copeland, 79, of Spiceland, died March 9 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.

He was born March 3, 1929, a son of the late Carroll and Gladys (Chew) Copeland.

Mr. Copeland was a 1947 Spiceland High School graduate. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Mr. Copeland married the former Patricia Buchanan on April 28, 1950, in Carthage. He was a farmer and a member of Knightstown American Legion Post 152, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Shirley Masonic Lodge. He was known as a loving husband, father and granfather and a 28-year volunteer camp ranger at Camp Ada, a Girl Scout camp near Knightstown and Greensboro.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia (Buchanan) Copeland; a son, Joseph D. (wife, May Ann) Copeland of Greenfield; a daughter, Mary Kay (husband, Brian) Conley of Greenfield; three grandchildren, Joseph D. Copeland, Jr., Debra and Laura; five siblings, William (wife, Stella) Copeland of Lewisville, Max (wife, Janet) Copeland of Florida, Paul Copeland of New Castle, Jonell Green of New Castle and Richard Copeland of Indianapolis; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Dale Copeland; and a sister, Carolyn Addison.

Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 13, at Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home in Lewisville with Rev. Marion L. Hickman officiating. Burial will follow at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown with full military graveside rites conducted by Knightstown American Legion Post 152. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, at the funeral home.
