Rowena Shipp
Feb. 25, 1930 – Jan. 4, 2008
Rowena Shipp, 77, died January 4 at The Waters in New Castle.
She was born Feb. 25, 1930, in Kennard, a daughter of the late James Hugh and Nellie Rose (White) Knowling.
Mrs. Shipp spent her entire life in Henry County. She married Carl H. Shipp on Nov. 17, 1956, at Sugar Grove Methodist Church in New Castle by Rev. Cecil Reece, Jr. Mrs. Shipp graduated from Kennard High School in 1947. She served as office manager at Goodwin Brothers Automobile Company for 35 years, retiring in 1993. Mrs. Shipp was a member of Shirley-Wilkinson Community United Methodist Church, where she was secretary and treasurer. She also served as president of the United Methodist Women, was a Sunday school teacher and Chancel Choir member. She was also past matron and grand representative of Shirley Order of the Eastern Star #492. Mrs. Shipp was also a member of the Alpha Club, “Crafters” sewing group and the Red Hat Society.
Survivors included her self-adopted daughter, Francis Magee of New Castle; two sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; four brothers; and two sisters.
Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 12 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in Knightstown with Rev. Kurt T. Stone officiating. Burial will follow at Hicksite Cemetery in Greensboro. Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Friday, January 11, at the funeral home. Order of the Eastern Star services will take place at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Shirley-Wilkinson Community United Methodist Church with envelopes available at the funeral home.
