Elvis Gene Atkinson

Nov. 8, 1928 – Dec. 5, 2006

Elvis Gene Atkinson, 78, of Kokomo, formerly of Spiceland, died December 5 at Howard Regional Healh System.

He was born Nov. 8, 1928, in New Castle, a son of the late Elvis and Roxie (Rains) Atkinson.

Mr. Atkinson married the former Audrey Floyd on June 19, 1948, in Connersville. He was a 1947 Spiceland High School graduate who starred on Spiceland’s sectional championship 1946 team. He also ran track and participated in pole vault. Mr. Atkinson worked at a piano factory in New Castle, Western Electric in New Albany and served as a tool and die maker at Chrysler Corp. in New Castle and Kokomo for 40 years. He retired in 1988. Mr. Atkinson was a member of First Church of God in Kokomo. He was an active member and past officer of the Stonybrook Homeowners’ Association. He enjoyed visiting his parents’ Knightstown farm and also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends in addition to traveling and playing piano.

Survivors include his wife, Audrey Atkinson; three daughters, Deborah (husband, Richard) Pine and Cathie (husband, Steve) Davis, both of Kokomo, and Teresa (husband, Michael) Caldwell of Crown Point; a son, Kevin (companion, Kristie Smith) Atkinson of Corning, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Kay (McNew) Atkinson of Indianapolis; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Edwin Atkinson of Indianapolis and Ralph Atkinson of Virginia;a sister-in-law, Helen Atkinson of Virginia; and one grandchild, Jill Brucato of Cincinnati.

Funeral services were December 9 at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home in Kokomo with Pastors Ray Houser and Jerry L. Ausbrook officiating. Burial followed in New Castle. Visitation was December 8 at the funeral home.
