Bessie B. Hughes

July 5, 1919 – Dec. 5, 2006

Bessie B. Hughes, 87, of New Castle, died December 5 at Miller’s Merry Manor in Rushville.

She was born July 15, 1919, in Rush County, a daughter of the late Ira and Millie (Craig) Chew.

Mrs. Hughes was a Lewisville High School graduate and a graduate of Amber’s Beauty College in Anderson. She owned and operated Bessie’s Beauty Shop from 1956-1968. Mrs. Hughes was a member of New Lisbon Christian Church.

Survivors include a sister, Faye Couch of New Castle; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Dennis Gideon; her second husband, Joe Hughes, Jr.; three brothers, Monroe, George and Carl Chew; six sisters, Bonnie Rhodes, Crystal Taylor, Susie Lawton, Nannie Gideon, Nellie Catron and Norma Denney; and two infant sisters.

Funeral services were December 9 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Dan Heller officiating. Burial followed in South Mound Cemetery, West Lawn Addition. Visitation was December 8 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to New Lisbon Christian Church.
