Mary E. McCorkle

June 14, 1920 - Oct. 3, 2006

Mary E. McCorkle, 86, of Vevay, a former Knightstown resident, died October 3 at King’s Daughter’s Hospital in Madison.

She was born June 14, 1920, in Greenfield, a daughter of the late Clinton Jacob and Elsie (Breece) McPherson.

Mrs. McCorkle worked at Danner’s Variety Store in Knightstown for many years. She also worked at Indiana Knitwear in Greenfield. A Knightstown resident most of her life, she and her husband, Ernest, farmed in the Knightstown area for many years. She moved to Vevay in 2004. Mrs. McCorkel was a member of Knightstown Christian Church and formerly attended Grant City Wesleyan Church. A charter member of the Waynettes Home Ec Club, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and was known for her love for God.

Survivors include a daughter, Evelyn Kay (husband, Richard) Griffith of Vevay; a son, Robert E. “Butch” (wife, Kathryn) McCorkle of Middletown; five grandchildren, Melissa (husband, Randall) McVay of Pendleton, Melinda (husband, Dewayne) Estelle of Vevay, Christina (husband, Harold) Wright of Middletown, Angelina Vance of Middletown and Shannon Robert “Hank” (wife, Shawna) McCorkle of Mt. Pleasant; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest McCorkle, in 1988; a daughter, Bonnie McCorkle; a grandson, Thomas Griffith; brothers and sisters, Mile McPherson, James McPherson, Albert McPherson, Cecil Preston, Vinnie Evans, Myrtle Evans, Lottie Stanley and Elmer and Delmer McPherson.

Funeral services were October 7 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, Knightstown Chapel, with Rev. Richard Thayer officiating. Burial followed in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation was October 6 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the TCU unit at King’s Daughter’s Hospital in Madison, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
