David H. Shipley

Sept. 20, 1912 – Sept. 13, 2006

David H. Shipley, 92, of Franklin, formerly of Wilkinson, died September 13 at Franklin United Methodist Community.

He was born Sept. 20, 1912, in Hardin County, Ky., a son of the late William Louis and Sudie Pearl (Taber) Shipley.

Mr. Shipley moved to Indiana in 1930 and drove a dairy route to Crothersville. He was a 1932 Crothersville High School graduate and a 1939 Central Normal College graduate. He taught Army Air Force soldiers during World War II. He also taught math and science in Rush County and Wilkinson for many years. A Sunday School teacher, Mr. Shipley was also involved in teaching English to illiterate adults in Hancock County. He owned Shipley Insurance and Real Estate Agency in Wilkinson for many years. He was a member of the Greenfield Masonic Lodge, Hancock County Red Cross Board of Directors, Order of the Eastern Star #492, Shirley-Wilkinson United Methodist Church, Gideon’s and Lions Club. He was past president of the Independent Insurance Agency Association and past president of Hancock County Realtors Association. His hobbies included gardening, fishing, traveling and photography.

Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Ann Wilcoxon of Wilkinson; six grandchildren, Danielle Creekmore of Markleville, Jenny Mayfield of Wilkinson, Heather Solomon of New Castle, Sarah Held of Shirley, and Amanda Butler and Brittany Butler, both of Columbus; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Russell Shipley of Clearwater, Fla.; and a sister, Dorothy Shipley Rhude of Clearwater, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Aliene W. Shipley, in 2002; a daughter, Connie J. Butler in 2004; a brother, Garland Shipley; and two sisters, Evelyn Trulock and Bea Felts.

Funeral services were September 16 at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Rev. Jeff Mair officiating. Burial followed in Park Cemetery in Greenfield. Visitation was September 15 at the funeral home, including Masonic services. Memorial contributions may be made to Shirley-Wilkinson United Methodist Church.
