Mary Margaret Clay
March 15, 1935 – Sept. 8, 2006
Mary Margaret (Applegate) Clay, 71, of Spiceland, died September 8 at The Waters of New Castle.
She was born March 15, 1935, in rural Spiceland, a daughter of the late Philip Clifford and Dorothy Elizabeth (Black) Applegate.
Born in the same farmhouse as her father and siblings, she later married there as well. Mrs. Clay was an active 4-H member in her earlier years, winning the inaugural title of Miss Henry County. She maintained a strong interest in 4-H after that. She graduated from Spiceland High School in 1953. She was a secretary for the Main Navy Department in Washington, D.C., and also for the Indiana Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Children’s Home in Knightstown. She also worked at New Castle Products. Mrs. Clay spent most of her life as a homemaker and personal accountant. She was a lifelong member of Spiceland Friends Meeting and she was an active member and office holder in the Spicey Bees Home Ec Club and S.P.A.T.S.
Survivors include her husband, Walter Ringel Clay, whom she married on May 21, 1953; two daughters, Carolyn Jane Clay (husband, Dr. Mark A.) Truax of Crawfordsville and Janet Sue Clay (husband, James E.) Putnam of Knightstown; four grandchildren, Darby Elizabeth and Daniel Clay Truax and Mary Elizabeth and Rachel Lillian Putnam; a brother, Theodore Philip (wife, Betty) Applegate of Spiceland; a sister, Esther D. Applegate of Spiceland; several nieces and nephews; and great nieces and great nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Douglas Applegate.
Funeral services were September 11 at Spiceland Friends Meeting with David Brock and Dick Ratcliff officiating. Burial followed in Circle Grove Cemetery. Visitation was September 10 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle and one hour prior to services at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to S.P.A.T.S. or Spiceland Friends Meeting building fund.
