Ruth Hawkins

July 9, 1924 – Sept. 1, 2006

Ruth (Sparks) Hawkins, 82, of Wilkinson, died September 1 at St. Vincent’s Heart Center in Indianapolis.

She was born July 9, 1924, a daughter of the late Willis and Martha (Haynes) Sparks.

Mr. Hawkins retired from Delco Remy after 30 years of service. She attended Maple Grove Church for 49 years. There, she enjoyed working with youth and singing. She attended By His Grace Ministry Center. She was an avid collector of dolls, angels, flowers and many other nic-nacs. She was known as a friendly person who never met a stranger. She married Richard “Sammy” Hawkins on Nov. 12, 1956, and he survives.

Other survivors include a son, Rick Sheets of Wilkinson; a brother, Ira Willard Sparks of Wilkinson; three stepsons, James (wife, Marita) Hawkins of Laurel, Jeffrey (wife, Chris) Hawkins of Fayetteville, Ark., and Jack (wife, Debbie) Hawkins of St. Paul; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, Harry Joseph and George Hawkins of Tucson, Ariz.; a sister-in-law, Barbara McPherson of Anderson; a special nephew, France (wife, Rose) Jackson of North Carolina; a special niece, Betty Jane Bruce of California; a special grandson, Devin Hawkins of Laurel; longtime friends, Morris and Sabra McKinney of Wilkinson; her neighbors, Ralph and Joanne Oliver; and many other friends and neighbors.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Cecil Jackson, Viola Jones and Frieda Vasbinder.

Funeral services were Sept. 6 at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Pastors Susan Jones and Willie Rose officiating. Burial followed at McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson. Visitation was September 5 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to By His Grace Ministry Center, 4316 Westminster Ct., Anderson, IN 46013.
