Ernest Phelps, Jr.
June 23, 1919 – Aug. 27, 2006
Ernest Phelps, Jr., 87, of New Castle, died August 27 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Hospital in Carmel.
He was born June 23, 1919, in Indianapolis, a son of the late Ernest and Louise (Griffin) Phelps.
Mr. Phelps retired from Chrysler Corporation in New Castle after 32 years of service as a truck driver. He also worked at First National Bank of New Castle in the Environmental Services Department. He was also a self-employed carpenter. Mr. Phelps served as a 1st lieutenant with the U.S. Army during World War II in Europe. He was a member of Wiley United Methodist Church in New Castle. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, carpentry and spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Emily Ann (Scott) Phelps; two daughters, Penny Phelps of Indianapolis and Sheliah Phelps of New Castle; two grandchildren, Chadd Phelps of New Castle and Alisha (husband, Jeff) Leistner of Fishers; five great-grandchildren, Claar Phelps, Cassidi Phelps and Carli Phelps, all of New Castle, Ariel Leistner and Alexis Leistner, both of Fishers; two brothers, Vernon (wife, Maria) Phelps of New Castle and David (wife, Priscilla) Phelps of Knightstown; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles, John and Stephen Phelps; one sister, Dellia Warren; a step-grandson, Ronnie Blow; and a granddaughter-in-law, Lori Phelps.
Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 1, at Wiley United Methodist Church in New Castle with Pastor Darrell Gilbert officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 137 and VFW Post 1282. Burial will take place at South Mound Cemetery, Westlawn Addition, in New Castle. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday, August 31, at Main & Davis Funeral Home, Broad Street Chapel, in New Castle and one hour prior to services at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Hospital of Central Indiana with envelopes available at the funeral home.
