Ercell Bever, Jr.
July 2, 1927 – Aug. 26, 2006
Ercell Bever, Jr., 79, a lifelong Carthage resident, died Saturday, August 26, at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.
He was born July 2, 1927, in Rush County, a son of the late Ercell and Ruth (Rogers) Bever.
A 1945 Carthage High School graduate, Mr. Bever was a retired farmer who had worked at Winters Accounting for 44 years preparing taxes. He was voted Carthage Festival Citizen of the Year in 1983 and in 1987 he received Indiana’s Jefferson Award. In 2000, Mr. Bever was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by Gov. Frank O’Bannon. In 2005, Gov. Mitch Daniels presented him with the Distinguished Hoosier Award. Mr. Bever was very active in Boy Scouts of America and built a camp, Camp Bever, on his own property.
Mr. Bever held memberships and officer positions in several organizations, including the Carthage Lions Club (treasurer), Rush Lodge 580 A&M (treasurer), York Rite of Knightstown, Indianapolis Shrine Club, East Street Christian Church (treasurer), Rush County Community Foundation, Pioneer board of directors, Ripley Township Advisory Board, Rush County Republican Party and the Association of Indiana Counties. He was also active in county government, having been a member of the Rush County Council for over 30 years.
Survivors include several cousins.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30, at East Street Christian Church in Carthage with Rev. David Bonne officiating. Burial followed at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation was August 29 at East Street Christian Church. Memorial contributions may be made to East Street Christian Church or the charity of the donor’s choice.
