Aug. 8, 1917 – July 30, 2006

Louis Marion Culbertson, 88, died July 30.

He was born Aug. 8, 1917, in Knightstown, a son of the late Charles F. and Irene (Robert) Culbertson.

Mr. Culbertson graduated from Knightstown High School. He married Opal Elizabeth Shell of Indianapolis on July 8, 1941. The couple recently celebrated their 65th anniversary while Mr. Culbertson was in St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. Mr. Culbertson joined the U.S. Air Force in March 1942. He entered the Air Force at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis, but was sent to Duncan Field Air Force Base in San Antonio, Tex. He was then transferred to Edwards Air Force Base in California. He later received an honorable discharge from the Air Force. Mr. Culbertson went on to graduate from the Indiana University School of Business in Bloomington. He was a member of Phi Eta Sigma, Sigma Iota Sophomore Honorary Service Fraternity and was a Freshman Honor Society foreman. He and his family for a number of years lived in Fort Wayne where he worked for General Electric. While in Fort Wayne, Mr. Culbertson was a member of First Christian Church, serving as deacon and elder. He later returned to Indianapolis where he was employed as a federal bank examiner until his retirement at age 62.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Opal (Shell) Culbertson; a son, Louis M. (wife, JoEllen) Culbertson, Jr., of Wildwood, Mo.; a grandson, Andrew Maxwell Culbertson; a granddaughter, Jody Meredith (husband, Michael) Richardson of Cordova, Tenn.; two sisters, Ruth Brammor of California and Helen Culbertson of Indianapolis; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were August 1 at Crown Hill Cemetery, Peace Chapel, in Indianapolis. There was no visitation. Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Service handled arrangements.
