Owen D. Basicker
July 6, 1919 – July 16, 2006
Owen D. Basicker, 87, a longtime Grant City resident, died July 16 at Regency Place Healthcare Center in Greenfield.
He was born July 6, 1919, in Union County, a son of the late Joshua and Bertha (McDonel) Basicker.
Mr. Basicker was a graduate of Middletown High School. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany during World War II. A longtime farmer, Mr. Basicker retired in 1977 from Delco-Remy after 25 years of service. After his retirement, he mowed the lawn at the Eastern Hancock schools campus until 1996. He was known by students there as “Mowin’ Owen.”
Survivors include two sons, Dennis (wife, Mary Ann) Basicker of Kokomo and Melvin (wife, Oleta) Basicker of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; a step-son, Michael (wife, Peggy) Neeley of Monticello; four grandsons, a step-grandson; four great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; a sister, Twila Brock of Middletown; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Fern Basicker, who died April 4, 1997; and two sisters, Neva Binbow and Eva Folland.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m. on July 19 at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson. Burial will follow in McCray Cemetery. Visitation was July 18 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wesleyan Church in Grant City.
