DeLone Henley

Dec. 6, 1922 - July 6, 2006

DeLone (Jernigan) Henley, 83, of Dothan, Ala., died July 6 at Extendicare Hospice Services Facility in Dothan.

She was born Dec. 6, 1922 in Blakely, Ga., a daughter of the late Laurel Washington Jernigan and Flora Marie (Singletary) Jernigan.

Raised in Columbia, Ala., Mrs. Henley was a 1940 graduate of Houston County High School in Columbia, Ala. She enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and later served as commander of Knightstown American Legion Post 152 as well as district commander. She also served on several statewide committees. Mrs. Henley resided in Carthage and Knightstown for over 40 years before moving to Dothan in 1988. She retired as a linotype operator from Mayhill Publications in Knightstown. She was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church near Columbia, Ala.

Survivors include a daughter, Judith Henley (husband, George) Fernandez of Palmares Aljuela, Costa Rica; three sisters, Ruth (husband, Bill) Hand of Dothan, Ala., Emily Hunter of Columbia, Ala., and Ann Johnson of Webb, Ala.; a brother, Blake (wife, Louise) Jernigan of Columbia, Ala.; four grandsons, Leon Fernandez-Henley, Perry Fernandez-Henley, Gary Fernandez-Henley and George Fernandez-Henley; and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hamil Dill “Punch” Henley, Jr.; a brother, Edwin Franklin Jernigan; a step-brother, Gerald Pitts; and her step-mother, Florence (Pitts) Jernigan.

Serving as pallbearers were Anthony Jernigan, Kenneth Jernigan, Ashley Johnson, Charles Hunter, Gary Hunter, Phillip Hunter and Jim Hunter.

Funeral services were Sunday, July 9, at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church near Columbia, Ala., with Rev. Freddie McCain officiating. Burial followed in Blakely Cemetery in Blakely, Ga. Holman-Headland Mortuary in Headland, Ala., handled arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 6251 N.
