William H. Dixon

Aug. 4, 1922 – May 2, 2006

William Harold Dixon, 83, of Orleans, died Tuesday, May 2, at Dunn Memorial Hospital in Bedford.

He was born Aug. 4, 1922, in West Baden, Ind., a son of the late William Sherrod and Pearl (Tolbert) Dixon.

Mr. Dixon married Mary Helen Bartl on Oct. 8, 1950, and she survives. He graduated from West Baden High School in 1941. He spent 35 years in the banking business. Mr. Dixon worked at West Baden National Bank and served as assistant cashier at French Lick State Bank. Later, he served as executive vice president, cashier and trust officer at the State Bank of Carthage. He then returned to Orange County where served as vice president and trust officer at the Bank of Orleans. A member of Orleans United Methodist Church, Orleans American Legion Post 69, Orleans Masonic Lodge #153, Scottish Rite, and Valley of Indianapolis, Mr. Dixon also belonged to the Orange County Past Masters Association. Mr. Dixon was a World War II veteran, having served as an administrative specialist with the U.S. Air Force’s Ninth Air Force Service Command. His service took place in the European theater of operations, including England, France, Luxembourg and Germany. Mr. Dixon had been a member of the Carthage Lions Club, various committees with the Indiana Bankers Association, State Bank of Carthage board of directors and the board of directors of the Bank of Orleans. Mr. Dixon was a past master of the Rush Masonic Lodge #580 and he was a past commander of Phillips-Grigsby American Legion Post 149 in West Baden.

Survivors include his wife; and his son and daughter-in-law, Jerry Bartl and Colleen Dixon of Muncie.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Howard Franklin Dixon and James Edward Dixon.

Funeral services were Friday, May 5, at Ochs-Tetrick Funeral Home in Orleans with Rev. Patrick Sinnott officiating. Burial followed in Ames Chapel Cemeter in French Lick. Military graveside rites were conducted by Orleans American Legion Post 69. Visitation was Thursday, May 4, at the funeral home. A Masonic service was conducted at that time.
