Thomas F. Marshall

July 21, 1941 – May 3, 2006

Thomas F. Marshall, 64, of Rushville, died Wednesday, May 3, at his home.

He was born July 21, 1941, in Rushville, a son of the late William F. and Alice (Soukup) Marshall.

Mr. Marshall graduated from Rushville High School in 1959. He graduated from Indiana University with a degree in education in 1968. Mr. Marshall attended the Indiana University School of Law where he received a doctorate of jurisprudence in 1971. He was admitted to the Indiana Bar Association in 1971 and the Florida Bar Association in 1974. Mr. Marshall practiced law in Bluffton and served as Wells County Prosecutor from 1972-1974. He then moved to Florida and practiced law there from 1974-1976. He was appointed as a Rush County judge by then Governor Otis Bowen and was later elected to the position, which he held until 1996. Mr. Marshall was a Rush County public defender from 1998-2003. He was co-founder of the Rush County Youth Football program and he helped develop the Rush County substance abuse program. He also helped form the Rush County DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program and was a member of both the Rotary Club and Elks Lodge 1307 for over 35 years. Mr. Marshall’s other memberships included Antler Point Country Club, Flatrock Yacht and Bath Club and the Rush County Bar Association. He was a strong supporter of the Rush County High School Athletic Booster Club. On June 8, 1963, he married the former Marylu Becht and she survives.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jeff (wife, Jennie) Marshall of Wilmette, Ill., and Jim (wife, Lori) Marshall of Rushville; a brother, Bill (wife, Elsieann) Marshall of Columbus; and four grandchildren, Max and Anna Marshall and Stefanie and Lindsay Montgomery.

Aside from his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Rose Marie Ketchem.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 7, at Todd Funeral Home in Rushville with Rev. Hank Anderson officiating. Cremation followed. Visitation was Saturday, May 6, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rush County High School Athletic Booster Club or the charity of the donor’s choice.
