Joseph L. Sullivan

Sept. 11, 1912 – May 2, 2006

Joseph L. Sullivan, 93, a former longtime Knightstown resident, died Tuesday, May 3, at Regency Place Nursing Home in Greenfield.

He was born in Tescott, Tx., on Sept. 11, 1912, a son of the late Charles and Italene (Roundtree) Sullivan.

Mr. Sullivan graduated from high school in Kansas and started college at Illinois Wesleyan University. He later graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. Mr. Sullivan owned several area restaurants, including Sullivan’s Restaurant in Knightstown, The Pineshelf and Tally Ho restaurants in Muncie. He and his brother, L.A. Sullivan, started The Port Hole restaurant in New Castle. He was also the owner of a Western Auto Store in Richmond and Sullivan’s Liquor Store in Knightstown.

Mr. Sullivan lived in Knightstown most of his life. He married Olive Lenore Kizer and she preceded him in death. On Oct. 6, 1946, he married Neva Lucille Randall and she survives. He was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church in Knightstown. He was a lifetime member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) in Greenfield. Mr. Sullivan’s other civic and social memberships included Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and the Knightstown Kiwanis Club.

Survivors include his wife, Neva L. Sullivan of Knightstown; a daughter, Linda B. (Sullivan) Coleman of Knightstown; a grandson, RJ Coleman of Miami, Fla.; and three great grandchildren, Taylor A. Coleman, Bradley Joseph Coleman and Anna Victoria Coleman.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.

Funeral services are at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 5, at Bethel Presbyterian Church in Knightstown with Rev. Mervin Kilmer officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, May 4, at Todd Funeral Home, Butcher Chapel, in Knightstown. A BPOE service will be held Thursday, May 4, at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
