Richard H. Sampson

July 18, 1920 – April 23, 2006

Richard H. Sampson, 85, of Arlington, died Sunday, April 23, at Miller’s Merry Manor in Rushville.

He was born July 18, 1920, in Hampton, N.J., a son of the late William and Irene (Heed) Sampson.

Mr. Sampson was a retired welder who for many years worked at White Consolidated, Inc., in Connersville. Mr. Sampson earned the Purple Heart, Victory Medal with silver and bronze stars and the Meritorious Service Award while serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and United Auto Workers (UAW). On July 3, 1941, he married the former Stella Suszek.

Survivors include his wife, Stella Sampson of Arlington; two sons, Gerald R. (wife, Verna) Sampson of Richmond and Roger W. (wife, Lisa) Sampson of Arlington; three daughters, Virginia (husband, Mark) Rubie of Arlington, JoAnn Sampson of Greensburg and Barbara (husband, Michael) Brewer of Knightstown; two sisters, Virginia Hanson of Montour Falls, N.Y., and Janet Shook of Phillipsburg, N.J.; five grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Grant Sampson.

Funeral services are 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 26, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Rushville with Rev. William Turner officiating. Burial with full military rites will follow at Arlington East Hill Cemetery. Visitation, along with a rosary service, was Tuesday, April 25 at Todd Funeral Home in Knightstown. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
