Vela Shoopman-Rooker

July 28, 126 – Jan. 24, 2006

Vela Shoopman-Rooker, 79, of Dunreith, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, at Henry County Memorial Hospital in New Castle.

She was born July 28, 1926, in Monticello, Ky., a daughter of the late Wesley and Bessie (Smith) Gregory.

Mrs. Shoopman-Rooker was a homemaker and a member of Grand Avenue Baptist Church in New Castle. She lived in the Lewisville and Dunreith areas most of her life before moving to Fairfield, Cal., in 2000. She married Leon Rooker on Nov. 13, 2000, in Beford, Ky., and he survives.

Survivors include her husband; one stepdaughter, Frema (husband, Jim) Byrd of Woodland, Cal.; five brothers, Edwin (wife, Alma) Gregory of New Castle, Willard Gregory of Richmond, Oma (wife, Virginia) Gregory of Dunreith, Thomas Gregory of Rushville, and Carlie (wife, Beverly) Gregory of Lewisville; two sisters, Zona Upchurch of Eubank, Ky., and Vena (husband, Richard) Swejkar of Spiceland; a brother-in-law, Robert (wife, Juanita) Shoopman of Fairfield, Cal.; a sister-in-law, Audra (husband, Clarence) Stewart of Straughn; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Fred Earl Shoopman, on May 31, 1998; and two sisters, Anna Steel and Ella Mae Gregory.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home, Lewisville Chapel, with Rev. Charles Dugger officiating. Burial followed at Lewisville Cemetery. Visitation was 4-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, at the funeral home.
