Herschel J. Hagner
Nov. 17, 1913 – Nov. 29, 2003
Knightstown resident Herschel J. Hagner, 90, died Saturday, November 29 at Hancock Memorial Hospital in Greenfield. He was born November 17, 1913 in New Castle, a son of the late John G. and Ary (Shafer) Hagner.
Mr. Hagner owned and operated The Garment Cleaners in Knightstown retiring in 1979. He had worked at Swiss Cleaners at New Castle before opening his own business, and had also worked at New Castle Chrysler Corp. He was a member of the Knightstown United Methodist Church, Knightstown Masonic Lodge #16 F & AM, Shrine and Scottish Rite, 50-year member of the Knightstown American Legion, former member of the Chamber of Commerce, K of P Lodge and Kiwanis Club. He was World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Mary Anna (Wissler) Hagner of Knightstown; three daughters, Beth Ann Shirokawa of Corona, Calif., Faye Ellen (husband Charles) Loof of Orange, Calif., and Mary Alice (husband Larry) Wilson of New Castle; three grandchildren, Brad Alan Wilson, Paul Isamu Shirokawa and John Shirokawa; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Marie King of Hagerstown; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Allius, Jesse, William and John Hagner; one sister, Ruth Hagner; a half-brother, Herbert Harris and a half-sister, Ellen Boyd.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday, December 3) in the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Pastor Steve Brackney officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery with military graveside rites.
Visitation was held at the funeral home Tuesday, December 2 with Masonic services at 7 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Knightstown United Methodist Church.
