Donald Lee Patton
July 9, 1945 - Sept. 23, 2003
Former Knightstown Jr.-Sr. High School teacher and athletic director, Donald Lee Patton, 58, of Indianapolis died Tuesday, September 23. He was born July 9, 1945.
Mr. Patton was a graduate of North Central High School and a 1969 graduate of Ball State University, where he belonged to Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He taught at Lebanon High School for six years, was a teacher and athletic director at Delta High School for 14 years, taught at Chatard High School and finished his career at Knightstown, retiring in 2000.
Patton was a member of the IHSAA, a wrestling official and member of the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame. He won such prestigious awards as the Ball State University Alumnus Coach of the Year, ISHAA Wrestling Coaches Association Coach of the Year, Tom Carnegie award for overcoming personal adversity, National High School Athletic Coaches Association District 4 Wrestling Coach of the Year and nomination for National Coach of the Year for all high school sports.
He is survived by his wife, Karen; daughter Tara-Lynne (husband Ronald) Sinicki; a son Troy (wife Kim) Patton; three granddaughters, Katie, Caroline and Jenna; a grandson, Clay; his Uncle Bill (wife Trula) Owings; grandmother, Dorothy Emery; other aunts, uncles and nieces and nephews.
Services were held Saturday, September 27 at Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center Carmel with calling on Friday, September 26 and on Saturday prior to the service. Burial was in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, Fishers.
