Joe W. Taffner

Joe W. Taffner, 76, died Wednesday, March 5 at Parkview Nursing Center in Muncie. He was born October 20, 1926 in Bristol, Okla., a son of the late Joseph and Estelle Hopkins Taffner.
Formerly of Shirley, Mr. Taffner had made his home in Eaton for the past 27 years. A machine operator at Guide Lamp in Anderson, he retired after more than 18 years of service. He was a member of U.A.W. Local 663. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WW II. Taffner was baptized at the Shirley Christian Church. He enjoyed woodcarving and painting.
Survivors include three sons, Harold Eugene (wife Dorris) Taffner of San Antonio, Texas, Ferrell Lee (wife Cathy) Taffner of Rome, N.Y. and Joseph E. Taffner of Indianapolis; two daughters, Leawana (husband Michael) Wheatcraft of Greenwood, and Valerie (husband Ralph) Matthews of Arizona; 20 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; his companion of 27 years, Shirley Gilland of Eaton; three sisters, Olive Jarvis of Shirley, Velma Jones of Grove, Okla., and Lois Armstrong of Fairland, Okla.; several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Angela Taffner Jones; two brothers, Leslie and Everett Taffner; and two sisters, Irene and Marjorie Taffner.
Services were held Saturday, March 8 at the Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home ~ Estell Chapel in Shirley with Rev. Darrell Deck officiating. Burial was in Harlan Cemetery, north of Shirley. Visitation was held at the funeral home prior to services on March 8.
