Vernie L. Swinford

Oct. 30, 1912 – June 21, 2001

Vernie L. Swinford, 88, a resident of Okeechobee, Fla., died Thursday, June 21 at Okeechobee Hospital.

  He was born Oct. 30, 1912, a son of the late George and Ida (McKinney) Swinford.

Mr. Swinford had lived the past 21 years in the Okeechobee area, but was a resident of Rush County most of his life. The graduate of Clarksburg High School was a retired farmer, having farmed in the Jackson Township area in Rush County for many years. He was a member of the Hannegan Christian Church and the Farm Bureau Co-op and also an avid fisherman.

Swinford married the Jeanne Butcher Swinford on November 14, 1988 and she died April 14 of this year. Survivors include one son, Vernie J. Swinford; one daughter, Betty (husband, Charlie) Levi of Decatur; a stepson, Jerry Butcher of Knightstown; a granddaughter, Laura (husband, Mark) Francesconi of LaPorte; one step-grandson, 3 great-grandchildren, 6 step-great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Services were held at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 25 at Moster & Cox Mortuary in Rushville with Warren Engel presiding. Visitation was held Sunday, June 24 at the Mortuary. Burial was in the Hopewell Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Charity of the donor’s choice.
