Margaret Jean Smith

Margaret Jean (Garvey) Smith, 79, of New Castle, died Monday, April 30 at New Castle Healthcare.
She was born on March 15, 1922 in New Castle, a daughter of the late Francis and Leona (Brown) Garvey. Mrs. Smith was a 1940 graduate of New Castle High School. On October 12, 1947, she married R. Merrill Smith who preceded her in death on August 26, 1990.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Knightstown.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by a daughter, Rebecca Smith Stevens in 1983 and by one brother.
Survivors include one son, Tom Smith of Carthage; one daughter, Mary Elsworth, New Castle; one brother, John Garvey of Indianapolis; two sisters, Martha Bailey and Rosemary Brown, both of New Castle; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Rose Catholic Church in Knightstown Thursday, May 3 at 10 a.m. with Father John Luerman officiating.
Visitation will be Wednesday, May 2 from 4-8 p.m. at the Todd Funeral Home, Butcher Chapel in Knightstown.
Burial will be in Glen Cove Cemetery, Knightstown.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association with envelopes available at the funeral home.
