Dayton Elsworth Springman

Aug. 25, 1925 – Apr. 30, 2001

Dayton Elsworth Springman, 75, of Greensburg, died Monday, April 30.

He was born in Cumberland, MD, on Aug. 25 1925, a son of Dayton Elsworth and Jessie Louise Paul Springman Sr.

He was a graduate of Arsenal Tech High School in Indianapolis and attended Texas A&M University. Mr. Springman served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.

Spring married Elizabeth Joyce Wood on Aug. 23, 1988 and she survives.

Springman was a fireman for the Rushville City Fire Dept. for 25 years serving as the fire chief from 1964-1980. He also was the Rushville City Street Commissioner under Mayors Delon and Bostic and was a painter for Carter Lanning for many years.

He was a member of the American Legion, Raleigh Community Dance Club, a lifetime member of the Eagles and a past member of the Elks.

Survivors besides his wife are three sons, Edward Springman of Portland, OR, Deven Springman of Rushville and Drew Springman of Metamora; three stepsons, Hugh Loudenback of Fountain Hills, AZ, William Metz and Bart Phillip Metz, both of Greensburg; one daughter, Donna West of Kellan, TX; two step-daughters, Deborah K. Smith of Greensburg, and Jacquilyn Loudenback of Flagstaff, AZ; two brothers, William Springman of Rushville, and John Springman of Carthage; two sisters, Mary Sparks of Rushville, and Erma Horan of North Carolina; six grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren, one great-grandchild and one step-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 4 at the Todd Funeral Home in Rushville with Rev. Edward Springman officiating.

A Fireman’s procession and burial will follow at the Kingston Cemetery in Decatur County with military graveside services.

Visitation will be Thursday, May 3 from 2-8 p.m. at the Todd Funeral Home in Rushville.

Memorial donations may be made to the Decatur County Hospice, 720 N. Lincoln St., Greensburg, IN 47240.
