 'Courthouse Girls' Coming to HKI

September 10, 2008 - The “Courthouse Girls,” a troupe of Farmland women who produced a popular calendar to raise funds for restoration of the Randolph County courthouse, will be the featured speaker at a Historic Knightstown, Inc. meeting next Thursday.

“You might have heard about the entertaining calendar these ladies published to raise funds and awareness for the Randolph County courthouse project,” a letter from the Historic Knightstown said. Those who attend the meeting can see a clip from the group’s award-winning documentary.

The women, all 80-90 years old, posed nude for the calendar in 2005. Miniature courthouses were strategically positioned to cover up parts of their bodies. Since then, calendars have been printed every year, with printing of the 2009 calendar set to begin shortly.

Filmmakers made a documentary of the women’s efforts to save and restore the neighboring Randolph County courthouse at an estimated cost of $7 million. Fundraising is still underway.

The “Courthouse Girls” program is Thursday, September 18, at 7 p.m. at the Historic Knightstown museum on the Public Square.

Historic Knightstown’s annual Joyce Skaggs Hutcheon Memorial Art Show takes place this Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday noon-5 p.m. The show will feature works by local artists and crafts people. Included in the show will be books, handwork, jewelry, paintings, stained glass, gourds, pottery and other items. Some items will be for sale.
