Carthage Town Council Hikes Trash Collection Rates

July 2, 2008 - The Carthage Town Council voted last week to increase charges for trash collection for town residents and businesses.

Under the terms of Ordinance 2-2008, passed by a 4-0 vote during a brief special meeting on June 23, customer trash hauling rates will increase from $6.50 to $9.50 a month. The higher rates go into effect today, July 1, and will be reflected on the bill customers receive in August.

The monthly rate will increase to $9.78 a month in July 1, 2009, then to $10.07 in July 2010. The new rates were determined by taking the per customer charge the town is charged by Best Way Disposal, the company it contracts with for trash collection services, then adding a 10-percent fuel charge, plus another 20 cents to cover the town's administrative costs.

No members of the public attended a public hearing the council held on the ordinance immediately before they voted. Council member Bill Armstrong also was not in attendance.
