 Bus Drivers’ Pay Changing

June 18, 2008 - Bus drivers for the Charles A. Beard Memorial School Corporation will be compensated under terms of a new pay plan when the 2008-2009 school year starts. Acting last month on a recommendation from the corporation's transportation director, the CAB School Board unanimously approved a new policy where driver pay will be based on years of seniority and the route driven. Under the old policy, pay had been partially based on mileage.

"I think this will really solve a lot of problems and make way for more efficiency," Transportation Director Janet White told the board at its May 20 meeting. Business Manager David Bundy said the new policy, if strictly applied, results in less pay for four current drivers. However, he said the pay for these drivers would be adjusted to keep them at current levels until such time that their seniority puts them at a higher rate.

In other business at the May 20 meeting, the board approved a maternity leave request for an unnamed teacher, and approved the transfer of Carthage kindergarten teacher Katie Calvert to teach first grade next year. As previously reported in The Banner, the board also accepted the resignation of Knightstown High School Principal Ray Willsey.

Teachers Julie Lewman, Linda King, Marti Allen, Gloria Means, Melinda Conklin, Jamie Trautmann, Rachael Shepherd and Greg Branson were approved as summer school instructors. The board also voted to allow Kami Doubman, Theresa Hibbert and Kelly Hall to share the summer school attendance secretary position.

The board also approved Mark Simmerman and Susan Crowe as volunteer coaches for the girls varsity basketball team. The board accepted the resignation of girls JV basketball coach Karen Tuttle, who will be taking over as eighth grade girls coach.

The board approved two of three requested 2008-2009 field trips at the May 20 meeting. Family and Consumer Science students will travel to the culinary arts school at Sullivan University in Louisville, and Industrial Technology students will visit the Air Force museum in Dayton, Ohio.

The board approved school improvement plans for CAB's five schools. Pavy said the plans, required under Indiana’s educational accountability law P.L. 221, must be filed with the state by June 30.

Book rental fees for the 2008-2009 school year were approved for the the following grades: ($46); first ($120); second ($92); third ($101); fourth ($94); fifth ($104); and sixth ($100). Lab fees for students in grades seven through 12 were also approved, but not book rental fees, which will vary depending on students' course schedules.
