 Zurwell Pleads Guilty

April 30, 2008 - Amanda Zurwell, former business manager for the Charles A. Beard Memorial School Corporation, has pleaded guilty to one county of felony theft in Brown County.

According to Brown County Prosecutor Jim Oliver, Zurwell entered a plea of guilty to the theft charge during a hearing Monday morning in the Brown Circuit Court. Zurwell had been charged with stealing a $3,132 check from her former employer, Brown County School Corporation, in July 2006.

The theft charge is a Class D felony, which carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison and a $10,000 fine. A sentencing hearing has been set for June 23.

Zurwell, who worked for CAB from September 2006 through the middle of January 2007, still faces felony theft and forgery charges in Henry County with respect to crimes allegedly committed during her four-and-a-half months at CAB. She is charged with forging two CAB checks payable to herself - one for $2,297.19 that was cashed, and one for $2,651.50 that was voided before being cashed - and with overpaying herself about $2,300 after taking over the school corporation's payroll duties.

Zurwell is scheduled to stand trial in Henry Superior Court 1 on Tuesday, Aug. 19. A final pretrial conference is set for Thursday, July 24.
