Knightstown Council to Address Possible Water Rate Hike

January 16, 2008 - When it meets tonight (Jan. 16) for its regular monthly meeting, one issue the Knightstown Town Council is expected to address is a possible 47.8-percent increase in water rates and charges.

Accountants with H.J. Umbaugh & Associates in Indianapolis recommended the increase in rates and charges to the council at a special meeting in early December. After 16 years without a rate increase, a rate study prepared by Umbaugh said the 47.8-percent hike is needed to allow the town's water utility to meet its revenue requirements.

Other issues on the agenda for tonight's meeting include an update on the status of the town's contract for legal services with attorney David Copenhaver's firm, as well as discussion of the town's animal control contract with the county. The council is also expected to discuss a nepotism policy for town employees, conflict of interest forms, the council's appointment of someone to the Knightstown Library Board and council member committee assignments.

Tonight's meeting begins at 7 p.m. and will be held in the council's chambers at Knightstown Town Hall, 26 S. Washington St.
