Tri Students Win Lugar Essay Contest

December 5, 2007 - U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar recently announced the county winners of the 2007-2008 Dick Lugar Youth Essay Contest. Tri Junior High School students Cole Williams and Rebekah Bales were Henry County’s winners.

Eighth grade students throughout Indiana wrote essays focusing on this year's theme, “Energy Aware - Energy Independent.” Students were asked to consider the types of alternative energy available to us as we pursue energy independence and then describe how farmers can lead the way for a sustainable energy future. In addition, they were asked to consider how the focus on homegrown energy will impact Hoosier farmers, rural economies and the nation's security.

A farmer and former small businessman, Lugar created the Dick Lugar/Indiana Farm Bureau/Farm Bureau Insurance Companies Agricultural Essay Contest as a way to teach Hoosier youth about the state's agricultural heritage.

County winners will now compete at the district level. District winners will be invited to attend the Indiana Farm Bureau State Convention Dec. 7, in Indianapolis, where they will be recognized for their achievements. State winners will also be named at the convention.
