Claire Mercer to Lecture at Library
December 5, 2007 - Claire Mercer lives in Carthage, in a house full of history. Her home’s former inhabitant, Fredrica S. Weingart-Hill, led a fascinating life. Mercer will discuss the search that led to interesting discoveries about Hill at New Castle-Henry County Public Library on Friday, December 7, at 11 a.m. The program is free and will take place in the library’s auditorium. Participants are encouraged to bring their lunch as they hear from Mercer.
Fredrica Weingart-Hill lived in Mercer’s home from 1877 to 1927. Mercer discovered a postcard from Hill in a Knightstown antique shop and later found and purchased some of her letters. Mercer knew she was destined to research Hill’s life when an elderly gentleman gave her a book that Hill had given to him. The book was a collection of work by Friedrich Shiller, who was Hill’s favorite poet. The story was just beginning to unfold. Come and hear what Mercer discovered through a search which took her to Germany… following the path Hill traveled a century ago. From suspected espionage to secret money stashes, this will be an unforgettable story you won’t want to miss.
