Beatty, Tabb, Paul to Attend Girls State

April 11, 2007 - Jamie Beatty, Sarah Tabb, and Emily Paul have been chosen by the Knightstown American Legion Auxiliary Unit #152 to attend the 66th annual session of Hoosier Girls State. Megan Grant and Laura McCaffrey were chosen as alternatives.

The Hoosier Girls State event will be held June 17-23 on the campus of Indiana State University at Terre Haute. The delegates will join approximately 700 other young women for this government program designed to educate our leaders of tomorrow in the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of citizenship. This session of government and practical politics is non-partisan and non-political.

Citizens begin their week-long adventure by registering to vote, where they receive an assignment to a mythical political party that at registration time has no political organization, party beliefs or platform – all are established by the delegates within three days into the session.

A delegate also must file for an elected office on the city, county or state level. She then conducts her political campaign, complete with speeches and campaign materials. Once elected to office, delegates are sworn in and perform the duties as described for that position. Non-elected delegates are given appointments as well as encouraged to visit offices of those elected to communicate their needs as citizens.

Jamie Beatty, the daughter of Doyle Beatty and Denise McDonald, is a junior at Knightstown High School. Sarah Tabb, also a KHS junior, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Tabb. Emily Paul is a junior at Tri High School and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Randy Paul.

Megan Grant is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Grant and Laura McCaffrey is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steve McCaffrey. Both Grant and McCaffrey are juniors at KHS.

More information on Hoosier Girls State can be obtained from Knightstown Unit HGS co-chairpersons Esther Brock at 345-5339 or Bonnie Brewer at 345-2323.
