Friends of the Big Blue River Hold Meeting

March 28, 2007 - The Friends of the Big Blue River (FBBR) met March 20 at the New Castle-Henry County Public Library. Present were Lee Ann Wallen, Jon Creek, Jeff Ray and Shelia Marion.

A second clean up day has been scheduled for the Day of Caring in September and will cover from State Road 38 to County Road 100 S. The June 9 clean up will cover the Knightstown area from the U.S. 40 to State Road 140.

Ray will coordinate informational mailings to landowners adjacent to the river, which would outline conservation programs available through the various government programs.

The Big Blue River Conservancy District (BBRCD) is working toward acquiring some type of public access for recreational users.

The city of New Castle has submitted the revised long term control plan for sewer overflows and is awaiting review by IDEM. The goal is to eliminate or reduce as much as possible the number of sewer overflows, which go directly into the river during rainfalls.

Ray completed and submitted the annual letter to the editor, which outlined the year’s efforts of the FBBR.

Also, there are two projects involving grant monies, the Henry County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources which will result in pamphlets about the natural areas of Henry County, including maps which will highlight the Big Blue River corridor. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 23, at 6:30 p.m. at the library in New Castle.
