Friends of the Big Blue River Plan for American Rivers Clean Up Week
March 7, 2007 - The Friends of the Big Blue River (FBBR) met Tuesday, February 20, at the New Castle-Henry County Public Library. Present were Jeff Ray, Lee Ann Wallen and Randy Jones.
Ray said FBBR will be doing a river clean up during the American Rivers national clean up week. The local effort will take place on Saturday, June 9, and most likely will cover the State Road 38 to County Road 100 S. segment. An additional two or three cleanups will be scheduled during the summer. The upcoming regular meeting dates and cleanup dates will now be posted on the local WMDH community calendar.
Water testing results are due in to Hoosier Riverwatch by March 1. The County Road 400 S. site is due for testing this time.
A member of Ducks Unlimited has agreed to provide us with some wood duck nesting boxes for placement along the river corridor.
Ray said there has been no update on the Big Blue River Conservancy District acquisition of a public river access point.
The City of New Castle is required to submit its revised Long Term CSO Plan by March 15 or face monetary fines. Friends of the Big Blue River will inquire as to the progress of this effort and ask city personnel for informational updates.
Ray is also writing the annual letter to the editor to report on the accomplishments of the past year and the goals for 2007.
The group discussed the utilization of a web page for information delivery.
The revised 319 Watershed grant application was submitted on January 26 as requested and FBBR are awaiting word on the status.
The next meeting will be Tuesday, March 20, at 6:30 p.m. at the New Castle-Henry County Public Library.
