 Hoosier Gym Receives Defibrillator

February 28, 2007 - The Hoosier Gym in Knightstown was recently given an automatic heart defibrillator thanks to donations from several area churches, The Banner and the Hoosier Gym itself. Gym officials realized the need for such a device on January 14 when 29-year-old Wilkinson resident Andy Williams (left) suffered a heart problem during a church league basketball game at the Hoosier Gym. Williams collapsed on the bench and received mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, chest compressions and two defibrillator shocks before being taken to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis where he remained for several weeks. When he emerged from unconsciousness after two weeks, Williams said he knew the gym had to have a defibrillator.

Purchase of the defibrillator was financed by the Eastern Hancock Basketball League, Hoosier Gym, Knightstown United Methodist Church, Knightstown Friends Church, Knightstown Optimist Club, The Banner, Wilkinson Church of Christ and Park Chapel Christian Church in Greenfield. The Knightstown Volunteer Fire Department made the actual purchase and will train Hoosier Gym officials in use of the defibrillator.
